Chimpanzee Riding on a Segway

RonaldJ asked about how we categorize things that aren't "food" into our budget. The truth is, if you can buy it at Wal-Mart, AND it's something we regularly buy (laundry detergent, shampoo, etc.), then it's in our food category. Maybe we shouldn't call it a food category. But I can't get myself to call it a Wal-Mart category, because then I'd have to throw up. (I've found we mostly can't avoid Wal-Mart. The convenience of having to make only one shopping trip when you have three kiddos under five just outweighs everything else. I'm sorry. We do spend a lot of money on gluten-free stuff from various local stores, for whatever that is worth.)

However, things we don't "regularly" buy, would fall into maybe the Home improvement or Clothes/books category. Like the mailbox our mailman probably very much wishes we would finally get around to buying.

But, you know, your mileage may vary.

Who wants to get a song stuck in their head for the rest of the day? You do!

Thanks for bringing the "dumb guy" up to speed. ;-)

I love that picture of your kids on the blog header - it's worth at least a thousand words!!

Although I usually just call my "food" category "food," it's technically called "food and consumables." That way it encompasses shampoo, dish soap, food, etc.

Love the new pic of your kids.

The best thing that ever happened to me in my whole life was to move to a town that didn't have a SuperWalmart. Because I would probably never have set foot in a Target again. And I SuperLoveTarget.

I just found your blog from the crispy cook list. I did a post on my blog (The Gluten Free Optimist) in December about everyday low prices. I also just posted some gluten free jokes I wrote. The Thrifty Mama is a great blog for saving money!

Our "food" category covers monthly household items... all food, cleaning products, personal care items, etc... It's too hard to divy things up when the purchases are usually made together.

I'm trying to forget you said the W word... *sigh* I have to go there (I guess technically had to isn't true, but it was something we felt we needed to do) for the church cookies (the church is paying, the price is the lowest, etc...) and I cringe every time. I just can't do it! I won't allow myself to look or purchase anything other than the cookies I came in for.

That said, I do shop at Target... IMO they are no where near as awful. But we only do personal items/household items there and our food from natural stores and Costco because this crew has to buy in bulk. :)
