Gardening

My friends will laugh at me, but I'm actually considering planting a garden this spring. The temptation of local (really, really local) veggies is getting to me.

How does a person who hates being outside and touching yucky things learn about gardening? Useful gardening. Not for pretty. For food.

Actually, we attempted to maintain the ginormous garden that came with our last house, only to fail miserably. I cannot maintain a full-time-job type of garden. I'm talking a 5-minute-a-day garden? Possibly a container garden? Without spending a lot (or, um, any) money?

If anyone knows of any books on the topic, I'd love to hear about them!

I just ordered an ebook called Mama's Guide to Growing your Own Groceries or something like that from biblicalwomanhood.com and I LOVE it. I have no clue what to do and am like you- but I think I might be able to plant some stuff next year now.

I got it on Crystal's Black Friday special for $2- not sure how much it regularly is.

Square foot gardening by Mel Bartholomew is great. He advocated caring for a 1x1 foot square at a time. It really can be easy. I use a modified method, but he has great ideas.

Container gardening is awesome for certain plants to save room in your real garden for other plants. Eggplants love containers and peppers often do well in them too. The setup may take more, but putting a cover over your garden will help cut down on the need for weeding--wet newspapers make a great cover and biodegrade on their own so that's good too. :)

Don't be intimidated by the garden...E is actually old enough that she can help. It can be a daddy project, too. We have three 4x8 raised beds and it's "enough" to get great food out of it but not so much that they're *too* much.

I highly recommend Lasagna Gardening by Patricia Lanza. It turns the whole concept of gardening on its ear and makes it incredibly easy. (and cheap, depending where you get your materials)
You can read a review of it here...

I'm just itching to try it this spring.

Patricia - thanks for the suggestion! That looks really interesting, (especially that no weeding part!) I'll see if my library has it!
