In Which I Ask for Help

I have a question, and would *very* much appreciate any input! :)

I'm looking for a better way to store beans, rice, and various flours. I have the type of "pantry" (ahem, cupboard) with roll-out shelves, which aren't very tall. Ideas?

Thanks!

It would be easier if you would post a photo of your pantry.

Hmm. Easier. And more embarassing? ;)

How are you storing them now? Just in the bags?

Both in the bags and in round Tupperware canisters. I've kept my GF flours in the fridge in their bags.

I buy bread flour in 25 lb. bags, so I store it in a Rubbermaid storage tote, which is on the bottom shelf of a bookcase in my kitchen.

My other flours/sugar/etc. I just put the 5 lb. bag inside a ziplock bag to keep bugs out. I keep it all together in a plastic dishpan so when I'm baking I just pull the dishpan out, use what I need, and then put it back.

I have two sugar bowls for the everyday use (cereal, etc.) one has brown sugar for oatmeal, one has white sugar, so I'm not getting out the big bag everyday.

My beans I store in clear plastic shoeboxes.
Actually, I use those shoeboxes for EVERYTHING around the house.

My rice I have in a tupperware cereal keeper, so I can pour it out.

I also sometimes store it in mason jars or old spaghetti sauce jars if they are where you can see them.

I like the idea of clear plastic shoeboxes--you can more easily scoop than out of something with a narrower top. I like to put my flours and whatnot in clear containers so I can see if there are bugs in them (a phobia of mine). That said, I don't think that's as good of an idea if you don't use your flours up very quickly because the light will make them spoil faster. (Of course when you use them quickly they are less likely to get bugs...)

I also use Rubbermaid cereal containers for flour storage. I store my less-frequently used flours in the freezer.
