E has been acting reacty for a week or so. She's had some skin problems with her hands and face, and we've had the kind of discipline problems that indicate a gluten reaction. We reviewed everything she'd been eating, especially new things, like the dried banana chips we tried this week, and they were clear. I checked out the gum she got from the dentist, fine there. Could it have been something she ate at school? No, since we provided the treats this time. We were baffled.
And then I checked the new shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo is fine, but, oops! Wheat starch and wheat protein in the conditioner.
So, I'm curious: Gluten free people, what shampoo and conditioner do you use???

I use L'Oreal Kids 2-in-1 for my kids. I do that because my little one still needs a tear free shampoo, so both kids use it. It smells great. We are not a GF home. I did check the ingred. list and there is not wheat products listed in the "smells" I use. Granted it's not as inexpensive as Suave, but it smells great. It does last for a long time though. I go for over a month with one bottle. So, it's worth the $3.something.
Good luck! So glad you found what it was!!
Thanks for the heads-up! I think that's the one "kids" shampoo we haven't tried.
What an eye-opener (for me) of how vigilant you must be...
Do you still need a bread machine? I even found the manual! (And yes, I do procrastinate. Check my blog...no posts in January, although my mind is swirling with ideas.)
I use Suave - just check the label. My boys have some "smoothie" kind right now.
Zdoodlebub! Yes on the bread machine! And would love to see you post more to your blog!
We aren't gluten free, but can't have any FD&C colors. We just use baby wash (then again, he's a boy and doesn't care about soft, silky hair.)
There are very often coupons for L'Oreal Kids though.
Hi! I just found your blog, and LOVE it. We are a gluten free family of 6 on a moderate income, so I can use all the frugal tips I can get my hands on!
We've been glutened by shampoo/cond. too. It's a bugger. Now we just stick with Suave, their products are safe.
I use to rely on cheapo Suave to be GF too - until I had a reaction! Turns out not all are gluten-free! I use a mix. No, really...I buy several varieties of inexpensive GF shampoos and a couple decent ones and mix them all together in a old Jason (bath wash) pump container (I do the same with conditioner). My hair has never been happier!!
Always read the labels and check with the manufacturer!
I use Suave's humectant shampoo & conditioner. Gluten-free, and works great on my unruly, curly hair. Mare is right, not all Suave products are gf, but they clearly disclose their ingredients.
Yikes! Good to know not all Suave is gluten free, thanks for the heads up.
I started to make my own shampoo because of these same concerns (additives are enormous in most shampoos...even the 'natural' ones).
This is very economical to make and a little goes a long way. I keep a small container in my bathroom and the rest in the fridge.
And conditioning? Once a month or so 'treat' your hair with an egg for 15-20 minutes....if eggs are a problem then use coconut oil (sparingly since it is hard to get out!).
Thanks, everyone for your responses! I actually went and bought Suave's Humectant shampoo and conditioner before Li even posted about it, so that's a pretty great coincidence, since E's got some curly unruly hair herself! I didn't quite expect the coconut smell, but... oh well.
LOL! I love the smell!
I probably would too... except that when I was 3 I ate a whole bag of coconut and was sick for days afterwards. Even the smell makes me sick now!
