Corn Noodles

mksl asked:

Corn noodles? Never heard of them - what are they, where can you get them and how do they taste?

We first tried rice noodles, because they are the easiest to find here, but we didn't have the best luck (other than the Thai brand noodle packs with seasoning and oil which are delicious!), but then we tried DeBoles Elbow Style Corn Pasta. Our kids love these noodles, and we think they're pretty good too! None of that rice flour aftertaste (ew!). The only downside has been that they don't hold up well in the fridge, so we only make as much as we're going to eat for that one meal.

We buy that at our local natural foods store, but they are also available online through Amazon.com.

I've also heard that the quinoa noodles are really great, but we haven't tried them yet.

Have you tried Tinkyada brown rice pasta? It's probably more nutritious than corn pasta since it's whole grain, but it tastes just like gluten-containing pasta. They are my favorite and also available via Amazon Grocery. Good luck!

I think what we tried was their white rice spaghetti, and our kids wouldn't eat it. But they love their brown rice bread, so maybe they'd like the brown rice pasta more. Thanks!

I'm stuck on ordering food via Amazon? The Internets is a crazy place!

dang, my earlier comment didn't "take"--network problems. Here it is again

I second the vote for tinkyada. Even if/when I return to gluten, I will continue to eat it.

I have gotten quinoa pagodas from the co-op. They're ok but easily overcooked

Also, the Ancient Harvest pasta is good -- a mix of quinoa and corn, if I remember right. But, it doesn't have that funny quinoa taste/smell. We all like that stuff.

I mostly use Tinkyada, but I love, love, LOVE the DeBoles corn macaroni when I make old fashioned, baked mac 'n cheese! The tastes go well together.

Just have to be careful not to overcook the noodles.

I found that in a casserole, they do pretty well for leftovers. And as long as there's lots of cheese involved, I'm not too picky about the state of my noodles! :)

Tinkyada is good. My other fav is bionature which is, I think, a corn, rice, potato combo. I've found with rice pastas that even if you don't care for them in a regular pasta dish, they turn out great as a baked dish. Oyr Walmart carries DeBoles ziti and spaghetti. I pass on the spaghetti, but the ziti really does turn out great in baked ziti, which, incidentally does also hold up in the frig and reheat well.

Thanks, Alicia! I'll keep an eye out for bionature - sounds interesting!
