Life With Three

Well, since you asked... (okay, no one asked, who am I kidding?). Life with three kiddos under five is going swimmingly. And by that I mean, I'm swimming in noise and messes and love and smoochable cheeks. Awww.

BUT... It's kind of like sticker shock, really. Our life, it's expensive these days. I bought groceries (from the local grocery store thankyouverymuchenoughwiththeguiltalready) for the week for $87. Okay, not TOO bad. But then. Then I "had" to go to Wal-Mart. And when the cashier said, "That will be $98 please," I almost swallowed my tongue. $98! But! I didn't even buy anything!

My shopping list was:
Frozen chicken breast
Taquitos (ahem)
Kid toothpaste (which I didn't buy and have to go to the natural foods store for, ca-ching)
Diapers ($30! When will we switch back to cloth? WHEN?)
Dishwasher detergent
39 gallon garbage bags
Shampoo (we recently tried the baking soda/vinegar thing, and NO. Just, NO.)
Pop (yeah, yeah, I know)
Canola oil
Treats for school (bananas and chocolate milk)
Cat food

Okay, so I maybe could have skipped the taquitos ($6ish) and the diapers ($30) and the pop ($9). Which brings us down to a respectable $62. Oh yeah, and the stuff I bought that wasn't even on the list: clearance tights for E ($3.50 for two pairs), three candy bars ($1.92) and a Mountain Dew (enough with pop already!), and we're down to about $55.

Okay, add the candy bars back in. I'm not made of stone, people. ;)

Why didn't you buy the children's toothpaste? Does it contain gluten?

My kids LOVE taquitos. We consider them a GF staple at our house. It's one of the few things they eat without coercion. They won't even eat spaghetti, and we buy yummy GF noodles!

No, no gluten. We just prefer toothpaste without dyes* or flouride, which our Wal-Mart doesn't carry anymore. Apparently. ;)

*And yet, did my daughter spill an entire bowl of Fruity Pebbles on my newly scrubbed floor this morning? Yes, she did. No dye there. Yeah right.

We too had serious sticker shock when the third kid arrived. We'd been buying diapers for two since Matt was born, but somehow it just got really really expensive to clothe and feed and diaper them all. And it really hasn't gotten any better even though diapers are a thing of the past.

We just switched to cloth diapers. Yay for saving money!
Target carries Tom's of Maine toothpaste, so you don't have to buy that at the health food store. It's definitely cheaper at Target.

I admit it, I just started reading your blog. I'm already a fan! Hey, have you ever tried www.couponmom.com? If not, maybe that would help with the grocery bills....just a suggestion. I have started to follow the advise on this site and it does help.

I buy 2lb packages of good corn tortillas for $1 at the Mexican food store...it would be simple to fill them with beans or meat and fry them...for very cheap.
